NMP.2011.1.3-1 (New methods for measuring, detection and identification of nanoparticles in products and /or in the environment)

The main objective of the project is a development and validation of technologies for the detection and analysis of single nanoparticles in complex environments. The project is based on the new experimental phenomenon discovered recently by one of the project partners: single sub-wavelength objects give rise to optical signals in surface plasmon resonance microscopy. This provides a unique possibility for ultrasensitive on-line detection of nanoparticles. The technology will be realized as a compact device, tested in different liquid and gas phases and applied for different practically relevant analytical tasks. The system can be used to monitor safety of environment during production and exploitation of nanoparticles and nanomaterials. Within NANODETECTOR project, the approach will be applied by the producers of nanoparticles and nanoparticle-based materials (Italian and British SMEs-partners) for monitoring of nanoparticles at their workplaces and in the waste, for nanoparticle release during aging of nanoparticle based materials as well as in water and in transparent non-colloidal drinks (juices, white wine, etc). More complicated media will be tested as well.
